SUMMARY:Webinar: PFAS monitoring
DESCRIPTION:The PFAS family comprises approximately 4700 different man-made compounds categorised into different sub-sets. The physiochemical properties of PFAS render them extremely resistant to degradation\, hence they are often referred to as “forever chemicals”\, due to their persistence in the environment. \nOn 8th June 2021 \, from 4 pm – 5 pm CEST\, Sensileau is organising a webinar about PFAS. PFAS in water are a serious problem and more and more we are becoming aware of the dangers. In this webinar\, we shall focus on monitoring and the removal of PFAS from (drinking) water. We are going to invite two speakers: \nNajmeh Karimian\, working at the Department of Molecular Sciences and Nanosystems at the university of Venice\, will tell us about the PFAS sensor they have developed.\nMany limitations within existing methods of PFAS determination\, such as high cost\, long analysis times\, and centralized instrumentation\, can be addressed through the development of PFAS-detecting sensors. Robust\, rapid\, sensitive\, inexpensive\, and reliable techniques to quantify PFAS in the field are necessary to diagnose environmental contamination at the earliest onset of pollution. The university of Venice created an electrochemical sensor to detect PFOS. The sensor has a low detection limit\, a satisfactory selectivity\, and is reproducible and repeatable\, giving analytical results in good agreement with those obtained by HPLC-MS/MS analyses. \nTali Harif\, CCO at Puraffinity\, will tell us about the removal of PFAS from water.\nPFAS removal from water is highly challenging due to their unique physiochemical properties\, derived from a high degree of fluorination and the extremely high strength of the carbon-fluorine (C-F) bond. In addition\, the diversity of the PFAS family\, new regulations that now include broad spectrum PFAS removal\, and the different treatment challenges posed depending on which PFAS compounds are being targeted\, highlights the need for a flexible design approach for broad spectrum PFAS water treatment.\nAdsorption is the preferred method for removing PFAS from water\, due to low energy requirements\, non-complex operations\, and installation ease. However\, PFAS selectivity and adsorption capacity are pivotal in ensuring adsorbent materials are able to (1) remove the target contaminant in water containing additional typical constituents\, which can interfere and/or compete with adsorption sites and (2) provide operational reliability and acceptable usage times until the adsorbent requires replenishing.\nTali will explain how Puraffinity has developed a technology platform that facilitates functionalisation of various substrates\, whilst focussing on development of highly PFAS selective unique materials\, possessing also a high adsorption capacity.

SUMMARY:Webinar: waterkwaliteit en procesmonitoring in de landbouw
SUMMARY:Webinar: monitoring end removal of microplastics
DESCRIPTION:You don’t see them with your eyes\, but they are more dangerous than you think\, microplastics \n\n\nIn the upcoming webinar on 13 April\, we will focus on the monitoring and removal of microplastics in (drinking) water. The public health and environmental risks of microplastics are well known\, but little information is available on how we can effectively monitor and remove microplastics and nanoparticles from (drinking) water. In this webinar\, we will highlight both the practical and scientific aspects of this topic. \nOur guest speakers during this webinar are: \n\nEelco Pieke\, senior advisor chemical water quality\,  working for Het Waterlaboratorium\, a water laboratory focusing on (drinking) water. Microplastics feel like our shared responsibility – after all\, these truly anthropogenic particles are persistently and ubiquitously present. Looking into prevention measures is necessary\, but it rarely provides us with information for assessing the current risk. For that\, we need monitoring. In this presentation\, we will look into the involvement of the drinking water section into the microplastics discussion\, and from a water perspective\, we will discover the prospects and challenges that await us for monitoring microplastics practice.\nDr. ir. Luewton L.F Agostinho\, currently in charge of the EHDA laboratory at NHL University of Applied Sciences in Leeuwarden and focusing on the removal of microplastic in water. In this we presentation\, Dr. ir. Luewton L.F Agostinho will tell us more about current challenges for the quantification and qualification of sub-micrometric particles in water. A focus will be given to polymeric (plastic) particles and how their fabrication with a technique known as electrohydrodynamic atomization (EHDA) can help us to better understand their toxicologic\, analytical and technological (water/wastewater treatment techniques) aspects\n\nRegister here \nIn order to register for this event\, you need an active account on the Sensileau Sensor Platform and 15 credits. If you do not have an account yet\, you can sign up here.

SUMMARY:Waterlink 2021 - Kwaliteitsmeting onder druk

SUMMARY:Sensileau Symposium

SUMMARY:The rise of rapid detection methods for viruses and bacteria
DESCRIPTION:Until recently\, the development of sensor technologies for water quality monitoring has largely been focused on (physico-)chemical parameters\, but sensors for the detection of microbial parameters are catching up fast. In light of recent global developments\, two examples will be discussed during this roundtable briefing: Legionella in drinking water\, and coronavirus in wastewater as part of sewer epidemiology studies. Will online monitoring of bacteria and viruses become as common as measuring pH\, conductivity and oxygen with sensors? \nTopics to be discussed include: \n\nVirus detection in wastewater and the potential for suppliers to offer technologies for rapid detection to support the identification of outbreak hotspots;\nIncreased risks of Legionella-proliferation in stagnant waters during lockdown\, and the need for rapid testing for a wide variety of potential customers\, especially if a second lockdown is necessary in some places.\nTransition to more sensor-oriented monitoring programmes for water utilities in order to reduce exposure risks for staff during a potential second wave or other future incidents.\n\nConfirmed participants include Dr. Jordan Schmidt\, LuminUltra’s Applications Manager. \nThis webinar is exclusively for BlueTech Research clients.

SUMMARY:Webinar: On-site or online algae bloom monitoring
DESCRIPTION:Sampling and lab analyses of algae to determine bloom formation and its effects on water quality have their drawbacks\, but on-site or online rapid monitoring of algae in surface waters is not as straightforward as we would wish either. \nJoin the discussion on algae monitoring and share your ideas on the following issues: \n\nHow can field measurements of algal densities be performed in a way that is representative of the algae present? How many measurements does it take?\nDoes sampling of algae for lab analysis result in representative insight into algal developments?\nHow can field monitoring equipment be calibrated to provide reliable and repeatable results?\n\nYou can register for this event by sending us an email\, indicating your interest in participating.
