SUMMARY:Webinar: monitoring end removal of microplastics
DESCRIPTION:You don’t see them with your eyes\, but they are more dangerous than you think\, microplastics \n\n\nIn the upcoming webinar on 13 April\, we will focus on the monitoring and removal of microplastics in (drinking) water. The public health and environmental risks of microplastics are well known\, but little information is available on how we can effectively monitor and remove microplastics and nanoparticles from (drinking) water. In this webinar\, we will highlight both the practical and scientific aspects of this topic. \nOur guest speakers during this webinar are: \n\nEelco Pieke\, senior advisor chemical water quality\,  working for Het Waterlaboratorium\, a water laboratory focusing on (drinking) water. Microplastics feel like our shared responsibility – after all\, these truly anthropogenic particles are persistently and ubiquitously present. Looking into prevention measures is necessary\, but it rarely provides us with information for assessing the current risk. For that\, we need monitoring. In this presentation\, we will look into the involvement of the drinking water section into the microplastics discussion\, and from a water perspective\, we will discover the prospects and challenges that await us for monitoring microplastics practice.\nDr. ir. Luewton L.F Agostinho\, currently in charge of the EHDA laboratory at NHL University of Applied Sciences in Leeuwarden and focusing on the removal of microplastic in water. In this we presentation\, Dr. ir. Luewton L.F Agostinho will tell us more about current challenges for the quantification and qualification of sub-micrometric particles in water. A focus will be given to polymeric (plastic) particles and how their fabrication with a technique known as electrohydrodynamic atomization (EHDA) can help us to better understand their toxicologic\, analytical and technological (water/wastewater treatment techniques) aspects\n\nRegister here \nIn order to register for this event\, you need an active account on the Sensileau Sensor Platform and 15 credits. If you do not have an account yet\, you can sign up here.

SUMMARY:Sensileau Symposium

SUMMARY:The rise of rapid detection methods for viruses and bacteria
DESCRIPTION:Until recently\, the development of sensor technologies for water quality monitoring has largely been focused on (physico-)chemical parameters\, but sensors for the detection of microbial parameters are catching up fast. In light of recent global developments\, two examples will be discussed during this roundtable briefing: Legionella in drinking water\, and coronavirus in wastewater as part of sewer epidemiology studies. Will online monitoring of bacteria and viruses become as common as measuring pH\, conductivity and oxygen with sensors? \nTopics to be discussed include: \n\nVirus detection in wastewater and the potential for suppliers to offer technologies for rapid detection to support the identification of outbreak hotspots;\nIncreased risks of Legionella-proliferation in stagnant waters during lockdown\, and the need for rapid testing for a wide variety of potential customers\, especially if a second lockdown is necessary in some places.\nTransition to more sensor-oriented monitoring programmes for water utilities in order to reduce exposure risks for staff during a potential second wave or other future incidents.\n\nConfirmed participants include Dr. Jordan Schmidt\, LuminUltra’s Applications Manager. \nThis webinar is exclusively for BlueTech Research clients.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Rapid detection of bacteria and other microorganisms in water
DESCRIPTION:Sensor technologies have traditionally focused on the detection of physical or chemical parameters\, but microbial detection technologies are catching up rapidly. Thus\, it is high time to update the Sensileau Sensor Database with the latest information on online and on-site microbial detection systems.  During this webinar\, Sensileau’s expert will present the latest information on monitoring techniques for the detection of bacteria and other microorganisms in the field. Some technologies aim at specific identification and quantification of microorganisms\, others provide an indication of bacterial activity. Each type of instrumentation has its own specific niche application and usefulness\, so it is important to make the right choice when selecting microbial monitoring instrumentation. To illustrate the application of online and on-site microbial detection systems\, two speakers will discuss real-life showcases: \n\nMr Joep Appels: Safety and quality control in drinking water systems by online monitoring of enzymatic activity.Microbiological water safety is rising as one of the major concerns regarding the production and distribution of drinking water. The current monitoring techniques are still time-consuming and mainly restricted to culturable bacteria. Therefore\, a rapid and accurate online monitoring system was developed by microLAN\, to enable drinking water supply systems can ensure safe water for their customers. \nDr. Gijs Jansen: Autonomous DNA detection technology: State of the art and real-life practiceBiotrack’s system for autonomous DNA detection was used to monitor microbial water quality Amsterdam’s Marine Basin during the yearly CitySwim event. The system monitored Escherichia coli\, Enterococcus faecalis\, and total bacterial count in parallel to culture methods according ISO-standards for a period of three months.\n\nRegister for the event here.
